Football Manitoba will be huddling up to find a new executive director as it was announced Thursday that Rob Berkowits has resigned after 12 years in the position.
Berkowits will conclude his tenure at Football Manitoba on Sept. 9. Rachel Harper, the programs and communications manager, will take on the role of acting executive director.
Berkowits has accepted the position of executive director of the Jewish National Fund for the Manitoba/Saskatchewan region.
"Being part of Football Manitoba has had a big impact on me both personally and professionally," Berkowits said. "The memories I will cherish are how much I enjoyed working with all great people in our membership and staff."
Under Berkowits, Football Manitoba's membership numbers tripled and he helped introduce numerous development programs in both tackle and flag football.
The Carillon Sultans were denied in their attempt to clinch the Manitoba Junior Baseball League championship on Friday night.
Carillon leads the Altona Bisons 2-1 in the best-of-five championship series after a 2-1 Altona win in Game 3. Colin Waldner drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the seventh inning Friday. Troy Voth went the distance on the hill for the win while Stephen Funk took the loss, giving up four hits and going the distance.
The last time Carillon won the title was in 2001.
At the recent International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Club Crew Dragon Boat Championships in Toronto, Team Manitoba earned 11 medals and Keith James served as a member of the ICF Officiating team.
A highlight for Team Manitoba was the Master Women team which won a gold medal in the 2,000-metre race.
Under head coach Jerome Seremak, Manitoba's team included 73 athletes from the Manitoba Paddling Association's premier dragon boat program.
The athletes competed in the junior, senior and masters competitions in men's, women's and mixed categories at distances of 200m, 500m and 2,000m, with 22-person crews and 10-person crews.
Participating countries included Canada, Germany, France, Russia, Ukraine, USA and China.
At the 2011 Senior Women's Canadian Fast Pitch Championship in Montreal, Smitty's senior women's team had a 3-2 record on Day 2 with wins over three Ontario teams and losses to B.C.'s Renegades and Alberta's Calgary Kaizen.
Infielder Heather Ebert was leading Smitty's at the plate with a .455 batting average after five games. The championship game of the nine-team tournament is Sunday.
