Centre stage
KEENAN Brown of Winnipeg and his Canadian teammates Christopher Perkins and Michael Kupchanko won a gold medal Saturday in the junior men's compound event at the World Archery Championships held in Legnica, Poland.
Canada defeated the Netherlands 222-220 in the final after beating the United States 227-223 in the semifinal. The USA went on to win bronze with a 229-227 win over Mexico.
In individual competition, Brown drew a bye in the first round, defeated Russia 143-140 in the second round, but lost to Republic of South Africa,146-141 in the third and did not make it to the final round of eight. Perkins finished sixth in the final eight and Kupchanko was seventh.
THE University of Manitoba Bisons gave up a touchdown with less than five minutes remaining on Saturday and lost 15-7 to the Regina Rams in a Canada West Conference pre-season football game in Regina.
Manitoba's Anthony Coombs scored the lone Bisons' major in the first half, hauling in a 10-yard pass from Khaleal Williams five minutes into the second quarter.
Coombs had 64 rushing yards, while Williams completed seven of 13 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. The Bisons also had three interceptions as David Berg, David Ferrier and Riley Coates all had picks.
Manitoba's first conference game is versus Calgary at home Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
LYNNE Gauthier of Winnipeg will be a member of the team that will represent Canada at the 2011 women's world tenpin bowling championships in Hong Kong, Sept. 3-11.
Michael Boroskae, also of Winnipeg, will coach the team.
THE Brandon University Bobcats have added a pair of recruits to their Canada West Conference men's basketball team roster. They are 6-foot-2 guard Emerick Ravier of Ottawa and 6-foot-8 forward Eric Shippers of Kingston, Wash.

THE University of Winnipeg Wesmen women's soccer team won one of three exhibition games this weekend at the University of Manitoba Invitational tournament.
Kayla White scored a pair of goals in a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Selects and Sera Trunzo had the other.
White had the lone goal in a 4-1 loss to the Regina Cougars. The Wesmen also lost to the Manitoba Bisons 1-0.
