Centre stage

-- Winnipeg soccer players Ali Musse of the Winnipeg Soccer Alliance and Marco Bustos of Bustos Academy, both 15, left Tuesday to join the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency Academy, which is a development team for the Major League Soccer club.

"For me it's a dream come true to have the opportunity to play at a professional club," said Musse in a press release. "My goal is to play at the highest level possible."

Moses Danto, also of WSA Winnipeg, was also invited but declined to go due to personal reasons. Both Ali and Moses are part of the Canada U-17 national program.

 

-- The University of Manitoba men's hockey team recently won the Ritten Sport Trophy Tournament in Ritten, Italy, beating Bremerhanven Fischtown Penguins of Germany 7-4 in the final. In the semifinal, Manitoba defeated Ritten 6-3.

-- Bob and Betty VanWalleghem, of Winnipeg lost 24-15 to Nova Scotia in the bronze-medal final of the Canadian mixed lawn bowling championships held Aug. 25-31, at Tuxedo Lawn Bowling Greens. Saskatchewan won the gold and British Columbia picked up the silver.

Manitoba will be well represented at Port Alberni, B.C., Sept. 7-14 at the Canadian Senior championships. Going from Manitoba are: Leo Dusablon, Mathew Chan and John Bjornson, men's division; Elaine Jones, Clarice Fitzpatrick and Anne Wright, women's division.

-- Engines will roar Thursday night at Red River Co-op Speedway as the WISSOTA championship meet is the main attraction. Also in action will be the lightning sprints, street stocks, super stocks, modified and late model divisions. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m.

-- Four games will highlight the Midget Football League of Manitoba on Monday. They are: Greendell Falcons at North Winnipeg Nomads (Charlie Krupp Stadium), noon; Interlake Thunder at Pembina Valley Cornhuskers (Winkler), 1 p.m.; Eastman Raiders at Fort Garry Lions (Ray Fennel Sports Centre), 3 p.m.; Transcona Nationals at St. Vital Mustangs (Maple Grove Park), 3 p.m.
