The University of Manitoba Bisons men's volleyball team has secured the commitment of three Manitoban recruits for the upcoming season.
On Tuesday, the Bisons announced Briercrest College alumnus Trevor Klassen and Fort Richmond Collegiate graduate Nick Stewner will join the team for the 2013-14 season.
Also, 23-year-old Winkler product Steve Goertzen will return to the team, where he played for two seasons starting in 2008.
Klassen, 23, comes to the Bisons after a four-year stint as a setter with the Briercrest College team in Caronport, Sask., which ended in 2012. The 6-3 Winnipegger was named MVP of that team for two consecutive seasons starting in 2010-11.
Stewner — who will turn 18 in August — is a 6-4 setter who was captain and MVP of his FRC team in 2011-12 and 2012-13, while also playing hockey and basketball during his high school career. He was named a conference all-star in 2011-12 and 2012-13, and will come into a familiar situation: he is the son of Bison Sports athletic director Coleen Dufresne.
Finally, Bisons coach Garth Pischke expressed his excitement at the return of Goertzen, a towering 6-7 hitter who racked up 79 kills, 14 digs and 40 blocks in 37 conference games with the Bisons.
