Boxers slug way to titles at provincial showdown
Novice champions in the various age categories included Matthew Bonne (48 kg) of United, Justin Podalma (60 kg) of Eastman, Philipe Bras (60 kg) of Pan Am, Jonathan Pearson (64 kg) of Pan Am, Rafael Bustillo (64 kg) of Pan Am Roberto Mendoza (69 kg) of Alliance, Kurtis Brownrigg (69 kg) of Pan Am, Kyle Gross (81 kg) of Eastman and Nestor Hayden (91 kg) of Brandon.
Other champions in various age classes through walkovers included Colton Easter of Brandon and Ron Traverse of Pan Am in 60 kg, Phil Gray of Crescentwood and Zafar Sacranie of United in 57 kg, Alex Simard of Eastman and Jacob Mousseau of Pan Am in 69 kg, Zac McLean of Alliance and Josh Murdock of Pan Am in 91 kg, Andrew Gardiner of Crescentwood and Noel Harding of Brandon in 81 kg and in the female division, Jessica Gross of Eastman and Melissa Susin of Crescentwood in 60 kg.
Manitoba Boxing vice-president Mark Collins said the teams of athletes advancing to nationals will be announced next week.
The national senior (ages 19 and up) championships will be Jan. 21-25, 2009 in Trois-Riviere, Que., the national cadet, junior (ages 11-18) and senior FTS championships will be Feb. 24-March 1, 2009 in Edmonton.
