6 MJHL players up for spots on team competing in international tournament
Six players from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League have been selected to attend the evaluation camp for Team West which will participate in the upcoming World Junior Challenge next month in Yarmouth, N.S.
Defencemen Paul Stoykewych of the Winnipeg Blues and Tanner Jago of the Winkler Flyers along with forwards Kurt Keats of the Blues, Denis Bosc of the Steinbach Pistons and Selkirk Steelers’ Parker Thomas and Hudson Friesen will participate in the camp which will be held Sunday to Wednesday at Calgary’s Markin MacPhail Centre.
Steelers’ head coach Ryan Smith, named an assistant coach with Team West, will also attend the camp.
There will be 60 players at the camp who participate in daily practices and be split among three teams for three intra-squad games. The Canada West team head coach is Humboldt Broncos head coach Dean Brockman who will be selecting a 22-player roster from the camp.
Players invited to the camp were selected from the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s five western Junior A leagues: the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) and Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL).
The 2012 World Junior A Challenge will be held Nov. 5-11 at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S. Canada West will play in Group A, joined by the Czech Republic and Russia. Group B will include Canada East, Switzerland and the United States.
