The Eastman Boxing Club puncher, nominated as Manitoba's female athlete of 2009, also won the Ringside world championship this past August in Kansas City, Mo.
The Manitoba Bisons men's hockey team will compete for the Canada West conference title for the first time since 2000-01 this weekend.
The Bisons will meet the Alberta Golden Bears, ranked No. 1 in Canada, in the best-of-three Canada West final series in Edmonton on Friday, Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday.
Both the Bisons and the Bears have already earned their berths in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship set for March 25-28 at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont. as Canada West received two spots in the six-team nationals this year. Manitoba last competed at nationals in 2004-2005.
Jesse Iles and her Margaret Barbour (The Pas) team of Kate Iles, Emma Snell, Kristen Duliak and Ashlee Lagimodiere defeated Alyssa Vandepoele's Landmark team 5-0 to win the provincial high school girls curling championship Saturday in Winkler.
The boys championship went to Sturgeon Heights. Connor Njegovan skipped his rink of Daniel Winters, Brandon Cohoe-Smart and Ryan Bruce to a 5-1 win over Carberry's Michael Mitchell in the final.
Seven skiers from the Summit Ski Club Eagles took full advantage of the mild weather last weekend at Holiday Mountain to win the gold medal at the Nancy Greene Ski League (eight years and under) and Rising Star (9-12 years old), competitions. There were 95 skiers participating in the last race of the season. Medals were awarded based on races completed during the ski season for their age groups.
Picking up gold medals for the Eagles, who train at Spring Hill Winter Park, were: Hayleigh Eby, Carter Gryko, Jack Healey, Hana Dunlop, John Moncrieff, Stephen Prall and Geoffery Boutcher.
The Silver La Riviere Ski Club Huskies (Holiday Mountain) won the silver. Team members include Amanda Creith, Jared Friesen, Karly Friesen, Evan Scharf, Sydney Strocen and Bryn McInnis.
The bronze medal went to the Bottineau Ski Club of Bottineau, N.D. Medal recipients were Stetson Nelson, Kutter Moum, Benjamin Christenson, Gabriel Deschamp and George Henry.
Players of the week
Tricia Mayba of the University of Manitoba women's volleyball team and Steve Christie of the Bisons men's hockey team are the Smitty's Bisons players of the week this week.
Mayba, a third-year middle, was named a tournament all-star at the 2010 CIS women's volleyball championship last weekend and helped her team to a silver medal.
Christie, a fourth-year netminder, backstopped the Bisons to a Canada West conference semifinal series win over Saskatchewan Huskies last weekend in Saskatoon.
