Archer still has shot at spot in Olympics

Call it a consolation prize.

Although Winnipeg's Jay Lyon failed to qualify for singles competition at the London 2012 Summer Games at the Canadian archery trials this weekend, the 26-year-old did secure a spot to compete in the upcoming team Olympic trials in Salt Lake City on June 21.

Lyon finished third in Montreal and will be joined in Salt Lake by Crispin Duenas (who placed first) and Patrick Rivest-Bunster, who placed second.

Lyon, who placed 10th at the Beijing Olympics and fifth at last year's world championship in Turin, didn't mask his disappointment, calling the weekend "embarrassing."

"But there's no sense moping or feeling sorry for myself," he said. "I'm going to go back home and beat myself up in the gym and do the things I need to do to get the emotion out and relax."

Canada did qualify for the team even in Beijing and finished ninth. All team members are also eligible to take part in the individual competition.
