Breezy Bend rules at golf mid-amateur championship
It was another Breezy Bend affair after Tuesday’s second round of the Golf Manitoba Mid-Amateur Championship, as the top three spots on the leaderboard are currently owned by members of the Headingley course.
Garth Collings, on the verge of his seventh career Mid-Am title, leads the pack with a two-round score of eight-under 136. Inked in second is Eric Johnson, who after leading the opening round with a five-under 67, shot a two-under 70 to finish a single stroke back of the lead. Justin McDonald sits in a three-way tie for third with Teale Merkeley and Daley Peters, seven shots back of first.
Collings was simply flawless in his second round, shooting four-under after the first nine holes. He would do one better on the back nine, sinking five birdie putts but would finish the day six-under thanks to three bogeys on 11, 15, and 17. Southwood’s Merkeley made the day’s biggest splash in the tournament standings. After finishing the opening round with a three-over 75, a score good enough for a share of eighth, the righty shot an impressive four-under 68 to jump five spots to third.
The Women’s Amateur is proving to be a close one heading in to today’s final 18 holes. Glendale’s Jenna Roadley and Bri-ann Tokariwski of Southwood, sit in a two-way tie for first place with an overall score of two-over 146. Southwood’s Faye Zachedniak is eight strokes back in third.
The final round will wrap up today at the Meadows Golf Club. The men tee off first starting at 7 a.m.
