Centre stage for Nov. 23, 2009

❚ A game-high 25 points by Catie Gooch led the University of Winnipeg Wesmen to a 70-64 Canada West women’s basketball victory Saturday, and a weekend sweep, over the ailing Brandon Bobcats at the Duckworth Centre. On Friday the Wesmen won 75-58, led by Gooch with 24 points. Amy Ogidan finished with 14 on Saturday, and Kaitlin Rempel had 11. Nicisha Johnson led Brandon with 15. The Brandon team was hit hard by a flu Saturday and dressed only seven players.

The Wesmen men didn’t do as well, losing to Brandon 83-76 in overtime Saturday. The teams were tied at 68-68 after four quarters. Eric Zimmerman led the Wesmen on Saturday with 18 points. Nick Lother added 17, Peter Lomuro 15, and Mike James 13. Dany Charlery led the Bobcats with 34.

On Friday, Brandon beat Winnipeg 80-75. Lothar had 22 for the Wesmen.

❚ In Canada West volleyball in Brandon Saturday, the Bobcats women beat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 15-7). On Friday, the Bobcats also won, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20).

Ariel Smith led the Wesmen on Saturday with 14 kills and 23 digs, and Alix Krahn had 10. Erin Visch-Krahn led the Bobcats with 15 kills.

The Wesmen men also fell twice to the Bobcats, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20) on Saturday, and 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-15) on Friday. Andrew Town led the Wesmen on Saturday with 17 kills followed by Justin Duff with 12. Paul Sanderson led Brandon with 28.

❚ The U of M Bisons men’s hockey team failed to gain a sweep at Max Bell Centre when the Saskatchewan Huskies beat them 3-2 in a shootout Saturday. The Herd won on Friday by a score of 5-2.
The loss dropped the Bisons to 9-3-2 in the Canada West standings, while the Huskies are 7-6-1. Mike Hellyer tied the game late in regulation for the Bisons, then came close to being the hero in the shootout, but rang his attempt off the post. Also scoring for Manitoba was Blair Macaulay.

On Friday, the Bisons got goals from Jared Walker with two, Calin Wild, Nolan Waker and Rick Wood.

The Bisons play Iowa State Friday and Saturday. Both games are at 3:30 p.m. at Max Bell Centre.

❚ The Bison women needed extra time for the second straight night, as they swept the Lethbridge Pronghorns in a pair of Canada West hockey games in Lethbridge.

On Saturday, Becca King scored in overtime to give the Herd a 3-2 win. On Friday, the Herd won 2-1 in a shootout.
Also scoring on Saturday for Manitoba were Amy Lee and Nellie Minshull. Friday’s scorers were Minshull and Addie Miles in the shootout.

The Bisons play at home Friday and Saturday against the Saskatchewan Huskies (6-2-2). Both games start at 7 p.m.

❚ They’re down to the semifinals of the Boston Pizza AAAA provincial high school volleyball championships, following a hectic weekend of knockout competition.

The women’s semifinals will be held Wednesday at the University of Manitoba’s Investors Group Athletic Centre. Beginning at 6 p.m., the Crocus Plains Plainsmen of Brandon will take on the St. Mary’s Academy Flames.

On Saturday, the Plainsmen eliminated the Vincent Massey (Brandon) Vikings 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 25-21) in one quarter-final, while the Flames beat the Lord Selkirk Royals 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 27-25) in another.

The Westwood Warriors meet the Vincent Massey (Winnipeg) Trojans in the other semifinal at 8 p.m. The Warriors won their quarter-final over the River East Kodiaks 3-1 (25-21, 15-25, 25-19, 25-22), and the Trojans beat the College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 28-26, 25-17).

Thursday’s matchups on the boys side have the Dakota Lancers playing River East in one semifinal at 6 p.m. while the Mennonite Brethren Hawks and Miles Macdonell Buckeyes play in the other at 8 p.m.

In quarter-final play Saturday, Dakota defeated Niverville 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-18), River East beat Steinbach 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21), Miles Macdonell beat Lord Selkirk 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 15-25, 25-16) and Mennonite Brethren defeated the Garden Valley (Winkler) Zodiacs 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-15).
The finals are Monday at the U of M. The girls play at 6 p.m., the boys at 8 p.m.

❚ The River East Kodiaks girls and St. Paul’s Crusaders boys are the urban provincial junior varsity volleyball champions.

Led by tournament MVP Lauren Campbell, the Kodiaks defeated the Crocus Plains Plainsmen 19-25, 25-20, 17-15. Miles Mac won the bronze final beating Glenlawn 21-25, 25-17, 15-3.

Crocus Plains and Miles Mac each placed two players on the tournament all-star team. For the Buckeyes it was Ashley Goodwin and Kendra Bommersbach. Jodie Baker and Courtney Roberts were named from Crocus Plains. Melissa Norlan of Glenlawn and Emily Loewen of River East rounded out the all-star list.

Tournament MVP Soren Frederiksen led the way for the Crusaders in the boys final as they defeated Miles Mac 19-25, 25-22, 22-20. The bronze final went to Glenlawn over Linden Christian, 24-26, 25-21, 15-11.

Paul Rogalsky and Kevin Falconer represented St. Paul’s on the all-star squad, as did Mitchell Hendry and Michael Bommersbach of Miles Mac. Wings’s Jason Wegner and Lions Josh Mohammed also made the dream team.

❚ Ashton Densmore of Virden was named the rural provincial junior varsity girls volleyball championship tournament MVP after leading her school to a 2-0 (25-18, 25-20) championship victory over Major Pratt Saturday.

Tournament all-stars are: Jasmine LaFournaise and Tori Ciprick of Major Pratt, Ellyn Polk of Virden, Jaycee George of Dauphin, Cejay Hilhorst of Killarney and Melissa Funk of Garden Valley.
