EPC appproves $3-M plan to upgrade facilities for Canada Summer Games

A city committee has voted in favour of a plan to allocate $3 million to upgrade Winnipeg recreation facilities for the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

This morning, Mayor Sam Katz put forward a motion at council's executive policy committee to approve $3 million in capital spending as part of the city's bid for the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

Bid committee co-chair Hubert Mesman said event will bring together about 4,500 of the country's best amateur athletes, and Winnipeg will have the chance to host up to 20,000 out-of-province visitors. He said it's Manitoba's turn to host the games, but the Games could decide to move it to another province if Winnipeg's bid is unsatisfactory.

A bid proposal has to be submitted by April 6, and the host city will be announced at the end of April.

Katz said Halifax saw $130 million in economic spinoffs after the city hosted the games. He said the plan calls for the city, province and federal government to each contribute $3 million of capital funds to upgrade Winnipeg facilities.

"That's something I'd very much like to see," Katz said.

City council still needs to approve the expenditure.
