The host University of Winnipeg Wesmen will meet the Mount Royal Cougars from Calgary in the semifinals of the 46th annual Wesmen Classic men's basketball tournament at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen won their opening game with a decisive 88-41 victory over the Keyano College Huskies of Fort McMurray, Alta. on Friday night to earn a berth in the first semifinal on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

The Wesmen got points from 12 different players and all 13 players saw action.

"The first one is always pressure-packed and our guys did a good job in front of a pretty big crowd," said Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault. "We showed some rust of time off but we’re fortunate that we have relatively strong depth. We had the luxury in this game of being able to play a lot of guys for shorter shifts to help get their legs back underneath them after the (Christmas) break. Hopefully that will play dividends (Saturday)."

Mount Royal defeated North Dakota's Mayville State Comets 77-49 to advance to the semifinals.

The other semifinal to be played Saturday at 8:30 p.m. will see the Lakehead Thunderwolves play the Dickinson State Bluehawks.

In earlier action Friday, Dickinson State defeated the Brandon Bobcats 75-72 and Lakehead beat the University of Northern B.C. Timberwolves from Prince George 90-50. Brandon was led by Winnipeg native Jordan Reaves with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

In the high school boys' division of the Classic, the Oak Park Raiders defeated the Kildonan East Reivers 103-60 to advance the boys' final. The other semifinal game will be played on Saturday at 4 p.m. between the Garden City Fighting Gophers and the St. Paul's Crusaders.

The boys' championship game will be played on Sunday at 6 p.m. followed at 8 p.m. by the university men's championship final.
