Gold for Gold at Manitoba Games

Swan River- It was a battle of Winnipeg as the two local clubs competed for gold in the Under-16 male basketball final at the 2012 Manitoba Summer Games.
In the end it was Team Winnipeg Gold defeating Team Winnipeg Blue by a score of 94-69, a lopsided victory that saw players from every corner of the city compete.
Both teams would enter the final undefeated in their respective pools, with Team Gold ending with a perfect 5-0 record.
"We just had (an advantage in size and athleticism," said Winnipeg Gold head coach Eric Sung after the game. "We've played them before and we just knew if we rebounded well we'd set ourselves up for a good spot by the end of the game."
And shine they did as Team Gold would out score their local opponent 30-13 in the opening frame, a lead they would never give up.
"I just told them they've invested a lot of time in to this and this is their stage to shine now and they played fearless," said Sung, who is an assitant coach for the University of Manitoba Women's Bisons club. "There was no point in falling back and getting caught up in all the hoopla and just play basketball. They have high basketball IQs and they just took care of business."
Jowel Shuffler led Team Gold with 25 points but none would appear more happy with the win than Alec Bernier who could be seen most of the final quarter pumping up his fellow teammates as they rode to victory.
"We dreamed of this since day one and we've always wanted the gold," said the six-foot-four Bernier. "I've never won a gold before in my life so this is very new to me so I just got pumped with everyone making their shots."
The victory put an end to the 2012 edition of the Manitoba Summer Games and added another medal to Team Gold, making it 90 in the games, the highest of the seven regions.
