Gophers going for two in a row

The Garden City Fighting Gophers varsity boys basketball team will get a chance to go for their second consecutive provincial championship Monday as they head into the final against the Sisler Spartans.

Both teams advanced to the last round of the AAAA provincial championship Friday night after dispatching their opponents in semifinal tilts at the Investors Group Athletic Center.

The Spartans, who upset the top-seeded St. Paul's Crusaders in the quarter-final, held off a fourth-quarter comeback from the Kelvin Clippers to win their game 78 to 72.

Meanwhile, the 2012 champion Fighting Gophers held off the scrappy Sturgeon Heights Huskies, winning their game 78 to 62 en route to a chance to defend their title.

The provincial varsity basketball finals kick off at 6 p.m. Monday at Investors Group Athletic Center with the girls final between the defending champion Glenlawn Lions and the top-ranked Oak Park Raiders. The boys final is at 8 p.m.
