Manitoba fencers bring back silver and bronze from Quebec

Manitoba fencers brought home two medals from Montreal last weekend as Andre Lavoie won a silver and Adrian Symons took bronze at the Canadian Selection Circuit 2 Fencing competition.

Lavoie, a member of the Rapier fencing club, finished second in the men’s under-15 sabre while Symons, who is with the Phoenix fencing club, earned bronze in the junior men’s foil.

Adrien Sparling of Rapier fencing club, had to settle for a sixth-place finish in the senior sabre competition, when he lost to Canada’s No.-1 ranked (19th in the world) Philippe Beaudry of Quebec, by only two hits in a quarterfinal bout.

Provincial fencing team coach Ayach Bounachada said Symons had his best ever performance.

"He has been fencing now for three years at this level and this is his first medal," Bounachada said in a media release. "He and Lavoie are still young. In a couple of years I can see them making the national team."
