Manitoba settles for silver at U-18 women's hockey championship

Dawson Creek, B.C. — Team Manitoba fell just short of winning a national title at the women's U-18 hockey championship Sunday.

Team Manitoba held two leads in the game but it was Ontario-Blue that would take a 3-2 lead early in the third period. They scored into an empty net with one second remaining to win the game and claim the gold medal with a 4-2 victory.

This was a historic gold-medal game as it was the first time Ontario-Red has not been in the National Women’s U-18 Championship final. It was also the first time Team Manitoba found themselves in the gold-medal game at this event, previously only advancing to the championship game at the 2007 Canada Winter Games.

Team Manitoba's Jessica Vallotton opened the scoring midway through the first period and Lauryn Keen's goal at 3:27 of the middle frame gave Manitoba a 2-1 lead. Brittini Mowat made 20 saves for Manitoba.
