Marchak makes Canadian rugby team

  • Print

Winnipeg rugby veteran Mandy Marchak is set to make a return appearance in Canada’s colours at the upcoming IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Marchak was named to the 26-player roster for the tournament, which kicks off on Aug. 1 in Marcoussis, France. It is the largest event in international women’s fifteens play, and the Canadian team has sealed a berth ever since the tournament started in 1991. They finished sixth in 2010, and fourth — their best finish — in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

Marchak, who plays with Capilano RFC, was part of the 2010 team, and will join six other veterans on the roster. At this World Cup, Team Canada will face Spain, Samoa and England in Pool A. Spain holds a 2-0 record against Canada in World Cup play, while the Canadians will face Samoa for the first time on Aug. 5. They will wrap up their pool play with an Aug. 9 tilt against the 2010 runner-up English side.
