More U of M athletes scoring top marks
The University of Manitoba Bisons sports programs set a school record in 2011-12, ending the year with 102 student athletes achieving CIS Academic All-Canadian status.
It eclipsed the Bisons’ old mark of 90.
The new tally gave the school nearly one-third of all its athletes carrying a grade-point average of 3.5 (80 pamoer cent) or beter. Thirty-six student-athletes carried a 4.0 GPA (90 per cent) or higher.
The Bisons have had more than 20 per cent of their athletes at a 3.5 GPA for eight straight years.
Among the highlights of the school's academic performances are women’s soccer team member Jaime Lacoste completing her entire five-year career on the team as an academic All-Canadian.
The Bisons have 10 others who have achieved the status for four years.
Female athletes made up 52 per cent of the overall total, with the women’s soccer team posting the highest percentage, at 47.8 per cent. In men’s sports, the volleyball team led the way with 38.5 per cent.
Seven Bisons teams had at least five academic All-Canadians.
