Pursuit of Excellence tops in tourney
The Shaftesbury Titans had to settle for fourth at the inaugural Female Sport School Challenge hockey tournament after a 1-0 loss to the Pursuit of Excellence team from Kelowna in the bronze-medal game at the MTS Iceplex on Sunday.
The eight-team tournament, sanctioned by Hockey Canada, included high-school aged players from across Canada.
POE, outshot by Shaftesbury 24-19, got its only goal from Neepawa native and POE captain Halli Krzyzaniak on the power play at 11:31 of the third period.
The Shaftesbury team had a power play and pulled its goalie for the final 1:19 of the game but could not find the back of the net with the 6-on-4 advantage.
Shaftesbury goaltender Rachel Dyck, who did not allow a goal on an early third-period penalty shot awarded to POE left-wing Sarah Potomak, was named Shaftesbury's player of the game.
POE goalie Sara Besseling was chosen as her team's player of the game.
Shaftesbury forward Courtney Zajac was taken from the ice to hospital by ambulance in the late second period with a suspected head injury.
She was involved in a collision by the POE bench during which she hit the open gate during a POE line change.
Shaftesbury coach Eugene Kaminsky said early indications were that she had suffered a cut over her nose and bruise to the forehead but her prognosis was favourable.
Okanagan and Calgary's Edge School were playing in the gold-medal final.
