Saunders chasing world racquetball title
Winnipegger Jennifer Saunders will be competing for gold at the 16th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championship in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old Saunders punched her ticket to the final after defeating longtime rival Cheryl Gudinas of the United States 6-15, 15-13, 11-5. The rivalry dates back to when they met in the final at the 2002 world championship. Only this time, Saunders came away with the win.
"It's special," said Saunders in a news release about her second trip to the finals. "When I made it the first time I thought I’d be in many more. It’s a great opportunity after ten years."
Key to the victory was "staying calm, and hanging in there" after losing the first game. "I’ve lost the first game of a match before," said Saunders "and come back to win. One game didn’t mean anything."
Joining Saunders in the final will be Paola Longoria from Mexico. Longoria defeated two-time world champion Rhonda Rajsich from the U.S. to advance to her first final.
Canadians Frédérique Lambert of Montreal and Josée Grand'Maître of Longueuil, Que., lost to the Mexican team of Longoria and Samantha Salas in a women's doubles semifinal.
