A soccer academy team based out of Stonewall has claimed gold at an international soccer tournament. Chico’s School of Soccer Excellence picked up the U18 boys championship at the 2013 San Marino Cup in San Marino, Italy.
The team defeated the White Plain Rockets from the United States by a 1-0 score in penalty shots. Chico’s School of Soccer Excellence scored on four of their five penalty kicks and kept the White Plain Rockets to three goals on five attempts.
The team lost their opening game 2-0 against Akademija Duljaj (Serbia) before winning five straight games to pick up the championship. They defeated (Academia Venezolana de Futbol) Venezuela 2-1, Davie United Sharks (USA) 4-0, Misano FC (Italy) 1-0 and Akademija Duljaj 2-0 in the semi-final.
