Student athletes of the year announced

The Manitoba High School Athletics Association has chosen its four student-athletes of the year -- two from Winnipeg and two from rural schools.

The awards are given to athletes who maintain a minimum average of 85 per cent and participate in at least two interschool sports. Each graduating student receives a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of Manitoba's credit unions.

Alyssa Kidd of Glenlawn Collegiate and Matthew Kochan of St. Paul's High School were selected from Winnipeg, while Mikayla Gawiak from Hapnot Collegiate in Flin Flon and Kaylene Mangin of St. Claude School in St. Claude captured top honours from rural schools.

Kidd finished her high school career with an impressive 98 per cent average while representing her volleyball and basketball teams as co-captain. She was also was selected as school valedictorian and was an alto in Glenlawn's cultured choir.

Kochan captained the St. Paul's Crusaders football two who captured the 2012 ANAVETS bowl championship in the Winnipeg High School Football League. Kochan was also a member of the varsity basketball team and maintains a 95 per cent average.

Gawiak, a student from Hapnot Collegiate in Flin Flon, finished with a whopping 99 per cent average while competing in golf, cross-country running, soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton and track and field.

Gawiak was also president of the athletic council, member of the grad committee and assistant coach of the junior high volleyball team.

Mangin -- a volleyball star at her high school, St. Claude School Complex -- maintained a 95 per cent average. In volleyball she earned the honours of graduating and provincial all-star. She was also a member of the school's badminton and track and field team. Mangin is also class representative for student council and is vice-president of the grad committee.
