Thorleifson and Farough overall Manitoba high school athletes of the year.

The Manitoba High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) announced the 2013 Jostens High School Athletes of the Year today at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. Male and female athletes were selected from categories based on school population size. Two athletes were selected as the overall male and female athletes of the year. This year the winners were:

A Girls – Olivia Thorleifson of Nellie McClung Collegiate in Manitou. Thorleifson was captain of her softball team and provincial champion in both golf and volleyball. She was selected as MVP for the Provincial "A" Volleyball Championship and was a Graduating All-Star. She will be attending the University of North Dakota next year.

AA Girls – Lauren Wiebe of Morris School was captain of her basketball and soccer teams and co-captain of the volleyball team. The former MHSAA Athlete of the Week received the Ron Meyers Basketball Leadership Award. Wiebe will attend Providence University College next year.

AAAA Girls – Laura McManes of Glenlawn Collegiate was captain of her volleyball team and co-captain of her basketball team. McManes helped her volleyball club team go undefeated in league play and was named an All-Star on her basketball team. McManes will be attending the University of Calgary next year.

A Boys – Cole Waddell of Hamiota Collegiate played hockey, baseball, badminton, track and field and soccer. He was the soccer team captain and their leading scorer. In hockey Waddell was named team MVP and was the team’s top scorer. Waddell will attend the University of Manitoba next year.

AAA Boys – Theo Farough of Neelin High School was selected as team captain and Graduating All-Star in both volleyball and basketball. He was named All-Star at a number of tournaments his team participated in and coached the Neelin Mini Spartans volleyball and basketball programs. Farough will attend Brandon University next year.

AAAA Boys – Nolan Parrington of Dakota Collegiate participated in basketball, football, soccer and badminton. He was nominated as the Dakota representative in the Football Senior Bowl and an All-Star in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League.

Thorleifson of Nellie McClung Collegiate and Farough of Neelin High School were selected as the 2013 overall Manitoba Male and Female Jostens High School Athletes of the year.
