Track athletes earn weekly honours
Graceffo, Urniezius top jocks
Amy Graceffo of the Glenlawn Lions and Curtis Urniezius of the St. Paul's Barons in Elie have been named the Manitoba High School Athletic Association's athletes of the week.
Graceffo completed the trifecta — winning gold in the varsity girls triple jump with a leap of 5.54 metres, the varsity girls javelin with a toss of 38.02 metres and the varsity girls 80-metre hurdles with a time of 12.47s — at the 2012 Milk Provincial High School Track and Field Championship last week in Selkirk.
"Amy is an example of what happens when you work hard, practise, work hard and practise some more," said Keith Dyck, Graceffo's coach, in a press release.
The Grade 12 student currently maintains an average of 72 per cent, while also competing in soccer.
Urniezius competed in the same meet, setting a new provincial record in the varsity boys shot put with a throw of 15.63 metres. He also clinched top prize in the varsity boys javelin and discus. The 6-foot-4 Grade 12 student went undefeated in these three events over three different meets this season.
"Curtis is a tremendously focused and dedicated athlete with an unrivalled intensity and competitiveness," said his coach, Craig Baron, in a press release.
Urniezius maintains a 75 per cent average while also competing in volleyball, badminton and golf.
Idonije camp slated for Saturday
The Israel Idonije Foundation will hold their sixth-annual all-star football camp on Saturday at the University of Manitoba campus.
The camp will be held for kids ages 10-14 and drills will be run by Idonije, a Brandon native and current defensive lineman with the Chicago Bears, along with 20 members of the Bisons football team.
"The Bison football program has been a critical part of our all-star camp every year and I always look forward to coming home to Winnipeg," said Idonije in a press release regarding the event.
The camp will run from 1-3 p.m. at the Winnipeg Soccer Federation Indoor Soccer Complex (211 Chancellor Matheson Rd.)
Local rowers win five races
The Winnipeg Rowing Club had an impressive outing, winning five races at the 35th annual Western Canada Sprints on Wascana Lake in Regina on Saturday. Eric Johnstone, Ryan Desilets, Vic Bartel and Peter Vilks earned gold in the masters men’s quad, while Brandi Smith, Tracy Taylor, Crystal Evans and LeAnne Petherick won the lightweight women’s quad. Bartel won his second gold in the masters mixed doubles, and Sheila Wilson-Kowal won the masters women’s singles race. Smith claimed her second gold in the lightweight women’s singles. The event was the first regatta of the 2012 racing season.
Sifuentes finishes first
Winnipegger Nicole Sifuentes got off to a hot start Sunday at the Harry Jerome International Track Classic, claiming top spot in the 1,500 metres with a time of 4:06.90.
Caps get radio coverage
Manitoba’s newest hockey team, the Virden Oil Capitals of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, will be on the airwaves all next season. The MJHL has partnered with the Interlake Broadcast Group (BIG FM), which will carry all 60 games of the 2012-13 regular season, plus playoffs if the team qualifies. Former Winnipeg Jet Ray Neufeld will team with veteran broadcaster Ray Walker to call the games.
