Undefeated St. Paul's to defend football championship against Miles Mac

The St. Paul’s Crusaders are chasing the sweet repeat as the Winnipeg High School Football League’s Potter AAA division champions.

The Crusaders, winners of two of the last three ANAVETS Bowl titles, shut out the Murdoch MacKay Clansmen 49-0 at East Side Field on Friday night in their Potter division semifinal.

In the other Potter AAA division semifinal, the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes defeated the Dakota Lancers 23-16.

Coach Stacy Dainard's Crusaders team will put its undefeated (10-0) record on the line on Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Canad Inns Stadium against coach Dan Washnuk's Buckeyes.

It will be the fourth straight year a St. Paul’s team has been in the AAA final, while the Buckeyes are in the AAA final just one year after moving up to the Potter division from the Vidruk AA division, where they lost in last year's final.

"It's unreal that we're going to the final! We didn't know if we were going to get anywhere in this division," said Buckeyes running back Houston Rennie, who caught a key two-point convert from quarterback Jayden McKoy and scored what stood as the game-winning touchdown. "Competing with everyone like this is just awesome. To be in the final in AAA is just crazy."

Also on Nov. 9 at Canad Inns Stadium, the Kelvin Clippers will meet the defending champion Grant Park Pirates in the Vidruk AA division’s Free Press Bowl at 5 p.m.

On Nov. 8 at Canad Inns Stadium, the Neelin Spartans (Brandon) will take on the Steinbach Sabres in the Currie A division's Canad Inns Bowl at 7:30 p.m. The junior varsity division’s championship, the Home Run Sports Bowl, will be played Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. between the Oak Park Raiders and the Vincent Massey Trojans (Winnipeg).
