Wesmen fall short in final

The Lakehead Thunderwolves defeated the host Winnipeg Wesmen 84-67 on Sunday night in the championship game to win the 46th annual Wesmen Classic university men's basketball tournament.

The Wesmen trailed by just five points at half-time but the Thunderwolves outgunned Winnipeg 25-17 in the third quarter and shot 53.3 per cent from beyond the three-point arc in the second half to secure the win.

A crowd of about 1,400 took in the action at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre.

Winnipeg was led by Benny Iko with 16 points, with Steven Wesley adding 15 and Travis Krahn scoring 14.

Ryan Thomson was Lakehead's scoring leader with 22 points.
