Winnipeg rowers nab multiple golds

Winnipeg Rowing Club rowers came home from the Duluth this weekend with seven gold medals, won at the 108th NWIRA championship regatta.

More than 350 athletes representing 10 rowing clubs from Canada and the US participated in the various events.

Blazing a path to the top of the podium, and to third place in the team standings, were Kaitlin Rempel, Brandi Smith, Nia Perron and Claudia Blandford with two gold medals each.

Remple won in the open women’s single event as well as on a team with Perron, Blandford and Natasha Tersigni in the open women’s quad. Smith was victorious in the lightweight women’s single dash, and then teamed up with Andrew Lamont to win the mixed masters double event.

Perron and Blandford won their second gold medals when they teamed up to win the open women’s double.

Paul Thiessen won gold in the open mens single, and the final gold medal went to the junior B men’s quad of Maxwell Harley, Ben Dearing, Anselm Ragetli and Joshua Ilse.
