Winnipeg soccer players selected for Canada's national team

Soccer players Kianz Froese and Marco Bustos of Winnipeg have been selected to Canada's national male youth under-17 team for the eight-team 2012 AGS Cup tournament in Spain beginning on Thursday and ending on Oct. 13.

The international event will give national team coaches an opportunity to evaluate players for the 2013 U17 CONCACAF zone qualification April 6-19, 2013 in Panama and for the FIFA U17 World Cup in United Arab Emirates on Oct. 17- Nov. 8, 2013.

The U17 national team will train and play first-round matches against Morocco, Mexico and Russia. The other teams include Azerbaijan, Georgia, United Arab Emirates and the USA.

"It is great to see both Marco and Kianz continuing their development together with the National team. Both have progressed from our system to the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy and Kianz has made Whitecaps reserve team appearances," said Rob Gale, the Manitoba Soccer Association's technical director and national under-18 men’s team coach.

"I am sure if they continue to apply themselves they will be integral members of the squad and we look forward to them representing Canada at the CONCACAF Qualifying in Panama."

MSA executive director Hector Vergara said Bustos competed locally for FC Northwest and Froese played for Portage Trail FC and Garden City in the FC Northwest catchment area. Both players competed with the provincial teams program.

In other soccer news, Winnipeg's Jackie Tessier was named the Telus Queen's University female athlete of the week. Tessier, a fourth-year striker, led the No. 6-ranked Queen's Gaels to a pair of wins last weekend with four goals in two games. She has six goals this season, good for third in the Ontario University Athletics conference.
