Badminton wizards win high school honours

TWO high school badminton stars were honoured for their sporting achievements this week.

College Louis Riel singles player Renee Kielich was named the Home Run Sports urban high school athlete of the week Tuesday, after capturing silver medals at recent tournaments in Carman and Gimli. The Grade 12 student also competes in soccer.

The Tri-Star Rural high school athlete of the week honour went to senior Bill Heard of the Carman Cougars. Heard, together with his partner, won gold at every tournament they have entered as a mixed doubles pair this year, including tournaments in Gimli, Louis Riel and Carman. Heard also plays hockey.

Info session for golf season

THE weather may not whisper of golfing, but Golf Manitoba is gearing up for the season nonetheless.

The organization will host a spring information meeting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Larters at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club. Organizers will unveil Golf Manitoba's plans for 2013 and highlight events planned with its national partner, Golf Canada.

The competitive 2013 season will kick off on May 25 and 26 with men's and women's match play qualifier at Winkler Golf Club. The full season of competitions is up online at GolfManitoba.mb.ca, and registration is open.

Hoops extravaganza

THE rosters are now set for the province's all-star high-school basketball game and the courts are getting ready to play.

On Saturday, the top Grade 12 players from across the province will gather at St. Paul's High School for the all-star games, with the All-Manitoba Banquet and awards presentation slated for the Victoria Inn Hotel in between. The day's events open at 10 a.m. with the A-AAA girls all-star game, followed by the boys game at 11:45. After the 2 p.m. banquet, the girls AAAA game is slotted for 5:30 p.m., while the boys take the court at 7:15.

Tickets for the banquet are $35 each, and reservations must be made in advance through the Basketball Manitoba website. The deadline to reserve is Thursday at noon.
