AFTER a weekend sweep of the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary, the University of Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team is sizzling on a five-game winning streak.
The Bisons (9-8-3) handed Mount Royal (6-12-2) losses of 5-3 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday. Leading the Bisons were goaltender Dee-Ana Marion, who saved 38 of 42 shots over the two games, and forward Maggie Litchfield-Medd who had a four-point game on Friday with two goals and two assists.
In Saturday's 3-1 win, the Bisons scored all three of their goals in the second period with Meagan Vestby scoring the insurance marker while short-handed.
Mount Royal is skidding the other way having now lost eight in a row.
The Bisons head back to Calgary next weekend to meet the No. 2-ranked Calgary Dinos (16-3-1), the defending conference and national champions. Dinos third-year forward Hayley Wickenheiser, also Canada's national women's hockey team's captain, set two Canada West conference records in 82 seconds on Saturday in a 6-1 over the No. 9-ranked Regina Cougars. Wickenheiser scored 56 seconds into the game and then again at 1:22 which marked the fastest two goals by one player in a game and the fastest two goals by one team at the start of a game.
