Bisons in hunt at nationals

  • Print

After Day 1 of Golf Canada's Canadian University/College Championship, the University of Manitoba Bisons stayed close to the lead but there was room for improvement.

The five-man Bisons team ended their morning at the Southwood Golf and Country Club at plus-5 (with the top four scores from their team taken into account).

Manitoba currently sits in a tie for third place, nine strokes behind the leading Western Mustangs (minus-4) and the plus-1 UBC Thunderbirds.

The Bisons had a very early teeoff with very little wind, allowing fourth-year arts student Charlie Boyechko to take advantage of perfect conditions. Boyechko shot a 3-under 69 and sits in a tie for second on the individual leaderboard.

Western's Spencer Berk and Traynor Turkiewicz both shot 69.

Miscues

"The wind kind of picked up on the back nine, I made a few miscues and made a couple bogeys, but (I'm) not too worried, I'm playing pretty well," said Boyechko. "I think we'll be better once we get going. With more holes to play, I think we'll be OK."

Reigning Manitoba amateur golfer of the year and team captain Josh Wytinck struggled to find his putting stroke, shooting a 74. As a leader he said he must continue to control his emotions around his teammates.

"It's four days long, we're only a quarter of the way done, there's a lot of golf left," said Wytinck, a fifth-year education student. "We just got to stay in the present."

Wytinck's slow start isn't what the Bisons were hoping for, but coach Garth Goodbrandson has faith in his captain.

Despite the tough start, Wytinck managed to go minus-2 in his last four holes to end the round.

"He's just not going to give up, he's going to battle and battle, so that was really important for him," said Goodbrandson.
