Manitoba's best

medal hopes

Manitoba's best young athletes will compete on the national stage beginning Saturday at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Summerside, P.E.I., and ending Aug. 29 in Charlottetown, P.E.I. The games are held every two years, alternating between summer and winter. The last summer games were in Regina in 2005. Here are the Manitobans to watch at this year's games:

ATHLETICS

"ö Chantal Grant, 18, Winnipeg -- 100m, 200m, relays

"ö Quin Ferguson, 21, Winnipeg -- 400m, relays

A strong athletics team is optimistic that eight medals could be achieved.

CANOE/KAYAK

"ö Tom Sherwin, 17, and Andri Shchudlo, 20, Dugald -- C1-200m, C2 (two-person canoe) 200m, C2-100m and C4-1,000m.

The canoe/kayak squad has several returning athletes from 2005 and hopes to earn as many as nine medals.

CYCLING

"ö Leah Kirchmann, 19, Winnipeg

Mountain bike -- 80-km road race, 40-km criterium and individual time trial 10-15 km.

After competing at last year's Mountain Bike World Championships, Kirchmann will be a leader on this team, which hopes to win up to three medals.

ROWING

"ö Claudia Blandford, 20, Winnipeg -- Women's singles scull, quadruple and eights.

Blandford will be a medal threat in singles and will chase a medal in women's quad with teammates Annie Eastwood, Nia Perron and Clarey Funk.

SOCCER

"ö Tyson Farago, 18, Winnipeg -- goaltender

The team trained in Brazil during the winter and expectations are high for this group, which has identified a gold medal as its goal.

SOFTBALL

"ö Paige Smith, 19, Gretna -- Centre-fielder

Fresh off a national all-star award with her club team, Smith will lead a team that will take its own run at a medal to follow the silver in 2005.

SWIMMING

"ö Chantal Vanlandeghem, 15, Winnipeg -- 100m free, 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly.

"ö Aaron Chanas-Larue, 15, Winnipeg -- 400m individual medley, 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 200 backstroke, 50 backstroke, 200m individual medley.

The swimming team has its sights set on qualifying for 20 finals and winning 12 medals. A talented group of Special Olympians has a goal of six medals.

TRIATHLON

"ö Sarah-Anne Brault, 19, Winnipeg

A student athlete at West Virginia University and gold-medal winner at the 2008 Pan American championships, Brault is Team 'Toba's flag-bearer and will take her best shot at gold.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL (MEN)

"ö Stefan Savioe, Winnipeg, 20, and John Galloway, 22, Victoria, B.C.

Savoie, a player at B.C.'s Thompson Rivers University, and Galloway, a University of Manitoba Bisons player, are going for gold.

Volleyball

"ö Chris Voth, 18, Winnipeg -- Left side

Just back from the 2009 FIVB World Junior Men's Volleyball Championship in India, Voth will provide veteran leadership for this team, a big swing on the left side and a shot at a medal.
