Canada hockey amputees grab 6th straight gold

COLOUR the Canadian men's national amputee hockey team golden. Again.

The program picked up its sixth straight gold medal with a 6-3 win over Finland in the title game at the 2012 International Standing Amputee Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in Tampere, Finland last weekend.

Stony Mountain's Tom Rinn, one of two Manitobans on the club, said Canada skated out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and never looked back.

"It was an intense game; much closer than the final score," said Rinn, who grew up in Snowflake. "They came back in the second but we scored a late goal in the period to make it 5-2 heading into the third. "From there we just tried to keep things simple."

Rinn, who lost his leg in a lawnmower accident when he was five years old, is one of five players on the national team who have been there for all six championships.

"This one feels just as special as the first one," the 30-year-old said.

Brandon's Slade Doyle was the other Manitoban on the club.

Latvia upset the United States in the bronze medal game. Only four countries participated in the Worlds this year.

Manitobans get the call

EIGHT Manitoba-born players are going to the men's national B team selection camp, Volleyball Canada announced Friday.

The Winnipeg Wesmen men's team is well represented at the camp.

Players Zack Diboll, Joshua McKay, Brenden Black, and Stephane Waldie head up the list, with current Wesmen head coach Larry McKay guiding the B team program.

Winnipeg natives Chris Voth and Dane Pischke have also been invited.

Both played with the Manitoba Bisons last season. Two other Winnipeggers, Jason DeRocco and Kevin Miller, round out the Keystone contingent. DeRocco is playing professionally with Kifissia (Greece), while Miller earns his opportunity through the men's national training centre in Gatineau, Que.

The camp start Saturday and runs through May 15.
