Canadian women's volleyball team hits win column in Mexico

CANADA routed Honduras 25-9, 25-8, 25-10 Tuesday to advance to the quarter-finals at the women's volleyball Olympic qualification tournament in Tijuana, Mexico.

Canada, which finished the round-robin portion of the eight-country tournament third in Group A with a win and two losses, will face either Mexico or Cuba in today's quarter-final match.

Mexico, ranked 27th globally, and 10th-ranked Cuba met in Tuesday night's late game. The loser of that game was to meet 22nd-ranked Canada today, while the winner finishes first in Group B and moves on to Friday's semifinal round.

The winner of the tournament advances to the 2012 London Games.

Vancouver's Kyla Richey led Canada with 16 points against Honduras, while Tonya Mokelki of Weyburn, Sask., added 15 and Marisa Field of Vancouver had 14.

The Canadians had 13 aces and out-blocked Honduras 10-2.

"We played our second lineup most of the game and they did a good job,'' said Canadian head coach Arnd Ludwig.

Top scorers Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., and Tammy Mahon of Holland, Man., took the opportunity to rest for today's quarter-final match.
