Cougar, Eastman goalie named players of week

Forward Hudson Morrison of the Southwest Cougars and goaltender Tanner Friesen of the Eastman Selects have been selected as the players of the week in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.

Morrison was chosen the Chicken Chef West division player of the week after the native of Souris scored eight points (two goals and six assists) in three victories for Southwest last week.

Friesen, a native of Grunthal, was picked as the DEKALB East division player of the week after he stopped 41 of 45 shots last Sunday in a 5-4 win over the Pembina Valley Hawks.

-- FORWARD Alexee Klassen of the Winnipeg Ice has been named the Selkirk Keystone Source for Sports-Reebok player of the week in the Manitoba Female (AAA) Midget Hockey League.

Klassen, a Grade 12 student, scored goals in three straight games last week as the Ice went 1-1-1. Klassen is the scoring leader with the Ice with 19 goals and 28 points in 35 games.

-- LLA Ocon and Chris Komishon have been named the University of Manitoba Bisons Smitty's athletes of the week.

Ocon, a first-year member of the Bisons women's swimming team, recorded three top-10 individual results at last weekend's 2012 Canada West Swimming Championship at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Komishon, the men's volleyball team's second-year setter, helped lead the No. 2-ranked Bisons to a split at home last weekend against the No. 1-ranked Trinity Western Spartans. Head coach Garth Pischke posted his 1,200th career victory with Friday's win.

The Bisons (14-2) will meet the No. 10-ranked Winnipeg Wesmen (7-11) on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the U of W Duckworth Centre. The women's match between the No. 5-ranked Wesmen (12-6) and the No. 6-ranked Bisons (11-5) will be played at 6 p.m.

-- THE Manitoba Women's Junior Hockey League will hold its fifth annual Lieutenant Governor's Tournament this week with games beginning on Thursday and the gold-medal final on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. All games are at the MTS Iceplex.

The tournament, which will include the six MWJHL members plus teams from Thunder Bay, Brandon and Alberta, will begin at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday with the Manitoba Blizzard taking on the Silvertips.

-- FORWARD Chris Daniels, 20, of the Selkirk Steelers has been selected as the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's player of the week after he notched six points (four goals and two assists) in two games last week.

The Steelers, who have won seven of their last 10 games, will hold their annual fundraising dinner on Feb. 16 with NHL legend Marcel Dionne as the guest speaker.

-- CASEY Schouten of the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes varsity boys basketball team and Jenna Cook of the Major Pratt Trojans basketball team in Russell have been named the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association athletes of the week.

Schouten was chosen as the Home Run Sports urban high school athlete of the week after the 6-foot-5 forward led his team to the Buckeyes Classic championship and was named the tournament MVP.

Cook was selected as the Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the week after the 6-foot-1 athlete led her team to the finals of their home tournament despite playing with an ankle injury.

-- MANITOBA fencers brought home two medals from Montreal last weekend as Andre Lavoie won a silver and Adrian Symons took bronze at the Canadian Selection Circuit 2 Fencing competition.

Lavoie, a member of the Rapier Fencing Club, finished second in the men's under-15 sabre while Symons, who is with the Phoenix Fencing Club, earned bronze in the junior men's foil.

Adrien Sparling of the Rapier Fencing Club placed sixth in the senior sabre competition.
