Cougars' Thomson named Team Manitoba captain
On the Home Front
JORDAN Thomson of Wawanesa, a member of the Southwest Cougars of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League, has been named captain of Hockey Manitoba's under-16 male provincial team which will compete in the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup tournament Oct. 27-30 in Moose Jaw.
The alternate captains are Adam Brooks of Winnipeg and Ryley Lindgren of East St Paul, both members of the Winnipeg Thrashers.
Manitoba will meet Alberta on Thursday, Saskatchewan on Friday and B.C. on Saturday. The bronze-medal game will be played Sunday at 11 a.m. followed at 3 p.m. by the gold-medal game. All tournament games will be webcast through the Western Hockey League website link at www.hockeymanitoba.ca.
Smith going to ball hall
PITCHER Donnie Smith, whose No. 21 jersey has been retired by the Winnipeg Goldeyes, headlines a star-studded list of local individuals and teams who are the 2012 inductees into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame.
The 16th annual induction banquet and ceremony will be held on June 2, 2011 at 5 p.m. at the Morden Event Access Centre, site of the hall.
The individuals category also includes Alex Campbell, Wayne Gullett, John Lesychen, Bill Nicholson, Ernie O'Dowda, Bob Paradine and Iggy Scaletta.
In the teams category, the inductees are the 1986-1990 Hamiota Red Sox, the 1988-1993 Grosse Isle Blue Jays and the 1964-1969 Rivers Comets.
In the special category, the 1981 Team Manitoba Allstars Bison will be inducted and there will be special recognition for the Mutcheson family of baseball players, including Jim Sr., Michael, Ray, Jim Jr., Jack, Joey and Matt Mutcheson.

-- Johl Swendlo of the Central Plains Capitals has been named the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League's Chicken Chef West Division player of the week.
Swendlo, 16, scored the game-wining goal in the Capitals' 4-3 victory on Sunday over the Eastman Selects, recording a total of two goals and an assist in the outing.
Interlake Lightning goaltender Derek Davies is the DEKALB East division player of the week after he won all three games last week for his team. Davies, a 15-year-old rookie, posted a 2.59 goals against average and a save percentage of .910 in the three wins.
-- Erin Teschuk of the St. Mary's Academy Flames varsity girls' cross-country team has been selected the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Home Run Sports urban high school athlete of the week.
Teschuk, a Grade 12 student, helped lead her cross country team to the provincial title while she won the gold medal as the individual overall champion.
Michael Fochtberger of the Garden Valley Zodiacs boys' soccer team in Winkler was named the Tri-Star rural high School athlete of the week after the grade 12 midfielder was named the tournament MVP and led his team to gold at the provincial rural soccer championship.
-- Forward Jeremy Olinyk, 19, of the Winnipeg Blues has been named the Manitoba Junior Hockey League player of the week after he scored five goals in two Blues' wins last week, along with a pair of assists.
Olinyk is the Blues' scoring leader and is tied for third overall in the league with Portage's Shaquille Merasty, with nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points.
The Blues are tied with the Winkler Flyers for first in the Addison Division with 12 wins in 16 games.
