NIC DEMSKI rocked the World on Tuesday in Texas.
Demski, a second-year University of Manitoba Bisons running back, was named the World Team player of the game at the 2013 International Bowl in Austin.
While Demski and Team World lost 42-10, Demski scored Team World's only touchdown on a 61-yard run. He recorded a total of 74 rushing yards in the game and had a kickoff return for 41 yards.
The game is put on by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF). The 54-player World Team roster included players from 11 member federations -- American Samoa, Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.
Last year, the World Team won 35-29 and Bisons running back Anthony Coombs was selected World Team MVP and Bisons defensive end Evan Gill was named the World Team's top tackler.
High marks for Cockrell, Samking
UNIVERSITY of Manitoba women's volleyball player Rachel Cockrell and track athlete Wilfred Samking are the Smitty's Bisons athletes of the week.
Cockrell, a third-year left-side hitter, recorded 40 kills for the unranked Bisons in a home split with the No. 6-ranked Alberta Pandas last weekend.
Samking ran one of the fastest 60-metre races in school history last weekend, winning the event with a time of 6.84 seconds at the fourth annual Bison Classic track and field meet.
Dudar comes up big for Wild
A game-winning goal highlighted a five-point streak over three games and earned Jake Dudar of the Winnipeg Wild the nod as the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League's DEKALB East Division player of the week.
Dudar, 16, scored two goals and had three assists in three straight wins for the Wild last week.
Izvenkov earns MMJHL award
THE Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League's individual performance awards for January include Stanislov Izvenkov of the St. Boniface Riels as the Play-All player of the month, Ryan Grossmueller of the Pembina Valley Twisters as the Emco goalie of the month, Nolan Bray of the St. Boniface Riels Investors Group rookie of the month and Matt Vis Fort Garry/ Fort Rouge Twins as the Rental Experts defenceman of the month.
Peters stellar for MJHL's Flyers
GOALTENDER Reed Peters of the Winkler Flyers has been named the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Recycle Everywhere player of the week.
Peters, a native of Morden, led his team to a pair of wins while posting a goals against average of 1.00 and save percentage of .966.
In other MJHL news, Jesse Sinatynski of the Dauphin Kings is the RBC player of the month after the native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., led all scorers in January with 21 points in 10 games.
The Sherwood Hockey defenceman of the month is Steinbach Pistons' Kyle Rous, who put up 12 points in 12 games; Winnipeg Blues' goaltender Isaiah Plett is the MGEU goaltender of the month after he had six wins in seven games; and Tristan Keck of the Winkler Flyers is the IBAM rookie of the month after the native of Morris led all rookies in scoring with 15 points last month.
Meantime, Winnipeg Blues captain Kyle Bodnaruk has been named the Manitoba Pork peak performer of the month for January. Bodnaruk recently organized an event at Siloam Mission where his teammates served food to patrons, assisted with laundry duties and organized much-needed clothes for pickup.
Potter, Early net weekly honours
EMILY POTTER of the Glenlawn Lions varsity girls' basketball team is this week's Home Run Sports urban high school athlete of the week and Rebecca Early of the Treherne Tigers varsity girls' basketball team is this week's Tri-Star rural athlete of the week.
Potter, a 6-5 centre, was named the MVP of the River East, St. Vital and Sisler tournaments and was an all-star at the Pembina Trails tournament.
She set the Glenlawn girls' basketball single-game record this year with 46 points.
Early, a 6-0 post, helped lead her team to a victory over the No. 2-ranked Glenboro Panthers last week, scoring 28 points with 13 rebounds and five assists.
