Gryphons to host lacrosse competition

THE Manitoba Gryphons lacrosse team hopes the luck of the Irish is still in Manitoba after more than a century.

The Gryphons will host the 2013 Canadian Junior B Box Lacrosse Championship from Aug. 19-25 at the St. Norbert Community Centre. It is expected to draw 11 teams from across Canada.

The Gryphons are continuing Manitoba's proud lacrosse history as it was the Winnipeg Shamrocks in 1904 who won the first Olympic gold medal.

"This is finally a reality and long overdue," said Corey DesJarlais, who is the tournament's co-chairman with Laurie From. "It has been 20 years since Manitoba last hosted the Founders' Cup. This is the opportunity to showcase our player talent for scholarships and possible professional lacrosse career opportunities."

From said at least 200 volunteers are needed to run the event, which will showcase the best young players in Canada's national summer sport.

Speed skaters coming

IT'S the most wonderful time of the year for Manitoba's speed skaters who will play host to Canada's best young skaters this weekend.

The Manitoba Speed Skating Association is hosting the 2013 Canadian Age Class Long Track Championships on Saturday and Sunday at the Susan Auch Oval located at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex.

There will be more than 150 skaters from the Northwest Territories, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Manitoba competing in the various age classes at this competition. Athletes will range in age from 11 to 29 years old and are vying for national titles in their respective age classes.

Races will be held Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Admission is free and there is an indoor viewing area.
