Hawks going for gold in midget final

The Pembina Valley Hawks AAA female midget hockey team will play for gold today at the Esso Cup national championship in Charlottetown.

Cassidy Carels scored both Hawks' goals in a 2-1 win over the Edmonton Thunder (West) in Friday's semifinal game to send the Hawks to the gold-medal match.

Hawks goaltender Brittni Mowat, named the tournament's top goaltender, made 22 saves for the win.

Pembina Valley will meet the Thunder Bay Queens of Ontario in the final game at 3 p.m., which will be televised on TSN.


Four 'Tobans to camp

 

FOUR Manitoba players have been invited by Hockey Canada to the Canadian national women's program strength and conditioning camp on May 2-6 at York University in Toronto.

Defencemen Halli Krzyzaniak of Neepawa and Brigette Lacquette of Waterhen along with forwards Ashleigh Brykaliuk of Brandon and Cassidy Carels of Bruxelles are among 57 players invited to the camp.


Heide gets helping hand

DEFENCEMAN Dylan Heide, 20, of the Selkirk Steelers has been named the recipient of the inaugural Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba (IBAM) scholarship, a $2,000 award that goes toward post-secondary education.

Heide was selected for his community involvement, citizenship and excellence on the ice.

Heide, who plans to study business at university this fall, scored 61 points (20 goals and 41 assists) in 62 games.
