JARED Funk of Niverville has been named to Canada's 12-man wheelchair rugby team for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, Aug. 29-Sept. 9.

"There is a great deal of wheelchair rugby talent in Canada, but we believe that these 12 athletes are our best chance for gold in London," Andy Van Neutegem, High Performance Director for the Canadian wheelchair rugby program, said in a release.

The next major event for Team Canada is the 2012 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament on June 21-23 in Richmond, B.C.

PAIGE Smith of Gretna, a starting senior centre fielder with the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons women's softball team has been named a second-team all-star in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Smith, the Dragons' leadoff hitter, led the team with a .366 batting average and played in 42 of the team's 43 games. Smith, also member of Manitoba's Smitty's senior A team, led the Dragons in runs scored with 28 and stolen bases with 14.

DEFENCEMAN Kevin Pochuk of the Winnipeg Wild was named the Impact Player of the Year at Hockey Winnipeg's AAA Council annual awards banquet on Monday night.

Pochuk, the top-scoring defenceman in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League, led the league with a plus-81 rating. He finished tied for fifth overall in regular-season scoring with 64 points (19 goals and 45 assists) and played in 42 of the Wild's 44 games.

The Wild, coached by Paul Krueger, were the regular-season and provincial champions.

ST. JOHN'S-RAVENSCOURT School will bring a 14-player team of seven girls and seven boys to defend its title at the 2012 Canadian High School Ultimate Championships, May 5-6 in Montreal.

Coached by Dean Wright, Stephanie Chow and Sean Storm, the SJR team is the current Manitoba champion. SJR won the inaugural high school Ultimate tournament in Mississauga last year.

In Ultimate, players score points by passing a flying disc to a teammate in the opposition's end zone.
