Obby joins Bisons as O-line assistant

  • Print

FORMER Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive lineman Obby Khan has joined the University of Manitoba football team's coaching staff for the 2012 season to assist offensive-line coach Terry Watson.

Khan, 31, retired from the CFL last April after playing eight seasons, including six with the Blue Bombers. Khan played 118 CFL games, two playoff games and in the 99th Grey Cup.

Khan played Canadian Interuniversity Sport football for the Simon Fraser Clan and won the 2003 J.P. Metras Trophy as the outstanding lineman in the CIS.

The Bisons will begin training camp Aug. 18 and open the 2012 Canada West season on Sept. 1 at the University of British Columbia.

Giants' Muron sets record

ELMWOOD Giants pitcher Brett Muron, 21, has set a Manitoba Junior Baseball League record for strikeouts in a single season with 117.

Muron, who fanned five batters last Friday in a 7-4 loss to the Pembina Valley Orioles, eclipsed the former mark of 116 set in 2010 by former Orioles southpaw Anthony Friesen. Before that, the record of 115 by former Giant Carey Candy stood for 30 years.

Manitoba footballers 0-2

TEAM Manitoba is still looking for its first win after two days at the 2012 Football Canada Cup in London, Ont., a national tackle football championship for players under 18.

Manitoba lost 21-14 in overtime to Nova Scotia on Thursday. In its opening game Wednesday, Manitoba was defeated 31-16 by host team Ontario West. Manitoba will play in the consolation round today.

Paralympians look ahead

JOEY Johnson of Winnipeg and Canada's senior men's wheelchair basketball team have completed their Canadian-based training camp and are looking to the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, England.

Johnson and Team Canada defeated Team USA in the third game of a three-game pre-Paralympic test series on Wednesday night at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont. The Canadians lost the first two games. In London, Canada is looking for its fourth consecutive podium finish, having won gold in 2000 and 2004 and silver in 2008.
