Huskies hit new heights, beat Barons for lacrosse title

Soggy grounds posed a problem, but the Sturgeon Heights Huskies worked around it and blasted the Beausejour Barons 13-6 to win the Manitoba High School Field Lacrosse A Division championship Sunday at Buhler Park.

"We had a solid team," said Ryan Breen, one of four Sturgeon Heights captains, and scorer of two goals Sunday. "In the first half it was really close, and in the second half the boys started to pick it up, and you could tell we wanted it because they were relentless. They came out and kept filling the net with the ball."

The Westwood Warriors won the B final by defeating the Miles Mac Buckeyes 8-2, and the C championship went to the Pineview Pacers, who defeated the Springfield Sabres 11-5.

Breen said adjustments for the wet grounds had to be made during the game. "It threw a little bit of a curve in everyone's game. Once your sticks are wet there was a little bit of a hook, but we played through it, and tried to get guys' sticks tuned up, and things seemed to work out."

Eric Timlick and Matt Garvey had four goals each for the Huskies, while Ryan Bouer had two and Bryce Dodd had one.

Reid Steinke scored twice for Beausejour with singles going to Josh Weins, Brett Hanson, Kyle Groinus and Braden Pickard.

"I couldn't ask any more from these guys," said Huskies coach Kyle Breen, Ryan's older brother. "They played their hearts out, and the rookies really bought into the team game. We were champions in 2008, and West Kildonan won last year. It's good to be back."

Cole Selin, who scored twice for Westwood, said victory Sunday was sweet revenge. "They beat us earlier, but we came to the game today really cocky, and we wanted to get back at them. We just didn't put many balls on the net in the first game. Today we got shots on goal and played good defence."

"They (Miles Mac) were prepared in the first game, and we weren't," said Westwood coach Brian Vandetke. "Today they (the Warriors) really stepped up and played 100 per cent."

Also scoring two goals for Westwood was Jessie Ouellette, while single goals went to Morgan Winchar, Logan Richards, Dan Thurlbeck and Tyler Teather. Ryan Billington and Riley Muvaney scored for Miles Mac.

Rob Berthlette led the Powerview charge with four goals and Dallas Courchane added three. Single goals went to Dan Adams, Trey Blatz, Whitford and Dalton Lavoie.

"In the middle of the year I thought we'd maybe get up to B division," said Powerview coach Larry Sharpe, "but I am happy that we finished the way we did."
