Manitoba explodes for C-4 medals

Canoe silver, bronze at Summer Games

NADYA CROSSMAN-SERB, 19, and her brother Mohamed, 17, could be in for a bit of sibling rivalry in the C-2 canoeing competition today at the Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops, B.C.

Won silver

Nadya and her women's C-4 1,000 metres teammates Kara Hummelt of Winnipeg, Caroline Harper of St. Theresa Point and Megan Franks of Selkirk won a silver medal Sunday.

Meanwhile, the men's team of Winnipeggers Tom Sherwin, Jordan Smallwood and Mohamed, along with Lockport's Brandon Stamm won bronze in the men's C-4 1,000 metres.

Today, both brother and sister, who are originally from Libya, will attempt to collect gold medals when they compete in their respective C-2 finals.

"We thought we had a good chance of getting a medal," said Nadya, "and we almost got first place. It was really close."

Sunday's two medals boosted Manitoba's count to one gold, two silver and four bronze.

Manitoba's time in the women's race was 4:31.9. Saskatchewan was first in 4:30.5 and B.C. was third with 4:33.6.

"I think we just kind of lost it at the finish," said Nadya.

"We're weren't really as focused as the other team was and we kind of got out of stroke."

On the men's side, Manitoba had a time of 3:58.3 to claim the bronze, while Alberta won in 3:51.1 and Saskatchewan was second in 3:56.1.

Rivalry

"No worry," said Mohamed, regarding the sibling rivalry.

"I'll catch up to her tomorrow. I had back-to-back races Sunday. They had to motor boat me from the kayak to the canoe, so I was pretty tired.

"Tomorrow (Monday) I have a couple of C-2 finals with Tom Sherwin. We'll go for the gold."

Meanwhile, Nadya won't be sitting around smelling the flowers. She and Kara Hummelt as well as Manitobans Hannah Guttormson and Jocelyn Hummelt will be going after their own gold in the women's C-2 final.

The women's K-4 1,000 team of Nadya, Harper, Ashley Grose of Winnipeg and Franks, finished fourth in 4:32.1, while the men's K4 of Mohamed, Zane Clarke and Michael Delorme of Selkirk and James Lavalee of Winnipeg also finished fourth in 3:22.7.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Both Manitoba's beach volleyball teams are 2-1 after the second day of competition. On Sunday the men's team of Steven Guenther of Dugald and Winnipeg's Shane De Rooy split their games, losing to B.C. 21-11, 21-15, and beating the Northwest Territories 21-11, 21-19. On Saturday they defeated Saskatchewan 21-17, 21-14.

On the women's side, Shanlee McLennan and Ozana Nikolic, both of Winnipeg, also split their games Sunday. They lost to B.C., 15-21, 21-13, 15-9 and beat the Northwest Territories 21-7, 21-5. On Saturday they beat Saskatchewan 21-10, 21-9.

A victory by both teams today against Alberta would move Manitoba into the gold medal final. A loss would put them into contention for a bronze.

ATHLETICS

A silver medal was won late Saturday by Amanda Gundrum in the women's triple jump with a leap of 11.17 metres. Also, via countback in the women's pole vault, Team Manitoba added a bronze medal to its opening-day collection.

Gundrum, who hails from Swan Lake, finished behind British Columbia's Aisha Klippestein, who leapt 11.53, and in front of Danielle Parrish of Alberta with 11.16.

In the pole vault, Alexandra Allen won a bronze with a leap of 3.40 metres to tie fellow Manitoban Sarah Boila and Saskatchewan's Courtney Erickson. After a countback of misses it was determined that Allen and Boila were still tied, so two bronze medals were awarded to Manitoba.

In Sunday's 400-metre finals, Matthew Fitkowsky of Winnipeg came in fourth in 49.13 and Dominion City's Dylan Ostberg was sixth in 50.68.

BASEBALL

Team Manitoba was hammered 11-0 by B.C. Sunday, dropping their record to 0-3. Manitoba gave up 19 hits and made four errors. On Saturday, Manitoba dropped both its games. In the first, a six-run sixth inning vaulted Alberta to a 7-4 victory, despite the fact Manitoba out-hit them 10-6. However, Manitoba committed three errors, while Alberta was perfect.

The second game saw Saskatchewan win 10-2.

SOFTBALL

Alberta handed Manitoba a 7-2 loss in women's softball Sunday, getting even for Manitoba's 6-3 win on Saturday. In the other Saturday game, Manitoba lost 15-0 to B.C.

The Alberta men's team stomped all over Manitoba 16-2 in Sunday's game after thrashing them 18-2 on Saturday. In the other opening-day matchup, Manitoba lost 3-0 to B.C.
