Manitoba soccer stars nominated Buckeyes' QB McKoy stocks trophy case

QUARTERBACK Jayden McKoy of the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes was the recipient of two major awards Wednesday night.

McKoy won the Winnipeg High School Football League's Harry Hood Memorial Trophy and was named the offensive player of the year in the Potter AAA Division.

The Harry Hood Trophy is awarded to a player who exhibits excellence on the football field, in the classroom and in the community and includes a $500 scholarship toward post-secondary education.

Grant Park Pirates quarterback Damien Surprenant won the John Potter/D'Arcy Bain Sport Physiotherapy Bursary for a Grade 12 player who has shown consistent development and plans to continue his football career.

Matthew Wong of Grant Park was the winner of the Jim Foubister Award, which recognizes a player for overall sportsmanship and teamwork.

Winning the Kas Vidruk Memorial Lineman Award were Myron Doerksen of the Steinbach Sabres in the Currie A Division, Mason Dick of the Kildonan East Reivers in the Vidruk AA Division and Jeremy Drouin of the St. Paul's Crusaders in the Potter AAA Division.

The players of the year in the junior varsity division are Trevor Wright of the St. Paul's Crusaders on offence and Mason Bennett of the Vincent Massey Trojans on defence.

The Currie players of the year are Dylan Minshull of the Neelin Spartans on offence and Steinbach Sabres' Chris Brown Fillion on defence.

The Vidruk players of the year are Michael Ritchott of Grant Park on offence and Marc Morales of the Kelvin Clippers on defence.

In the Potter, linebacker Leon Cenerini of St. Paul's was the defensive player of the year.

Winning the Robert W. Whitlaw Memorial Award, presented to rookie players in grades 9 or 10 who were outstanding academically and on the field, were Todd Campbell of Sisler (Currie), Drake Lesperance of St. Paul's and Brady Oliveira of the Oak Park Raiders (Potter).

Speedy Manitobans hit ice in Quebec

TEN Manitobans will be among 100 speed skaters who will hit the ice this weekend at Quebec City in the first of four long track events in Speed Skating Canada's Canada Cup series.

At the Gaétan-Boucher Oval in Quebec City, men's and women's racing will be held today through Sunday in the 500, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 metres distances.

Manitoba skaters on the female side are Heather McLean and Michelle Daeninck, while the male side includes Kyle Parrott, Kirk Wright, Chad Dagdick, Hewson Elliott, Jess Neufeld, Andrew Lawler, Christopher Daeninck and Tristan Stepnuk.

DESIREE SCOTT of Canada's national women's soccer team along with Marco Bustos and Kianz Froese of the national male under-17 team have been nominated for the Canadian Soccer Association's Canadian Soccer Player of the Year awards in their respective divisions.

Scott was a member of Canada's Olympic team which earned bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games.

"They are quality players and strong role models for our soccer community," said Manitoba Soccer Association executive director Hector Vergara. The winners will be announced by the CSA during the week of Dec. 10-14.
