MBCI wins boys' AAAA championship

THERE might be nothing fancy about the plain blue jerseys of the Mennonite Brethren Hawks' varsity boys' volleyball team but they looked pretty classy with gold medals on them.

The Hawks defeated the Lord Selkirk Royals in straight sets 25-21, 25-22, 25-13 at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre to win the the 2012 Boston Pizza AAAA Provincial High School Volleyball Championship. The Hawks last won the title in 2009-2010 and lost in the semifinals last year.

"It means just everything to us to win. We've been in the provincials the last two years and we've lost so our school was really hungry for one and we got them one," said right-side hitter Brendan Folkerts, a Grade 12 player who led all players with 13 kills and was named to the tournament all-star team.

"Every time we've played these guys (Selkirk), it's gone to four. But we've been working really hard in practice and we've been extremely focused. Today, it just felt like we were firing on all cylinders and hitting really well. It just worked out perfectly."

In the second set, the Royals got their blocks going and tied the score 20-20 but there was no stopping the Hawks' attack led by left-side Josh Goossen, who had nine kills in the final and was named the tournament's most valuable player.

"That's a big conference rivalry for us. We play them a lot during the year," said MBCI head coach Brian Plett. "They (Selkirk) are just a class act and that team deserved better tonight. They didn't play their best tonight and we happened to play a really solid match all around."

The players of the game were Selkirk's Anders Hanson and MBCI's Folkerts. The Players' Choice Award winner was Adam DeJonckheere of the St. Paul's Crusaders.

On the tournament's all-star team were DeJonckheere, David Bommersbach of the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes, Selkir k's Brandon Sutherland and Joel Makara and MBCI's Adam Schriemer and Folkerts.
