Steep honoured, Moseley-Williams vies for nats

AARON MOSELEY-WILLIAMS of Winnipeg will be one of 46 prospects vying for roster spots when Wheelchair Basketball Canada conducts its 2013 selection game in Las Vegas in early January.

Twleve spots are available on both men's and women's teams from the camp, which runs Jan. 2-8 at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Moseley-Willians will be one of 22 men tryin for a spot on the men's team that has went undefeated in the Olympic Games last summer in London. Canada won its third Paralympic Games gold medal there.

Head coach Bill Johnson of Winnipeg will be part of the panel selecting the women's team from 24 candidates.

The Team Canada women have Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996, 2000 and a bronze in 2004.

Five locals head to worlds

FIVE Manitoba girls will compete for Team Canada West and three more have been added to bolster a developing program in the United States when the World Under-19 Ringette Championship begins next week in London, Ont.

Canada has two national teams (East and West) competing at the event, while Finland and developing elite programs from the U.S., Russia and France will also take part.

Melody Caron of LaSalle, Samantha Renooy of Oakbank, Karine Sabourin from St. Jean and sisters Erin and Shannon Sarahs will be part of Team Canada West.

One of the team's assistant coaches will be Rob Walker of the Magic and Angels clubs in Winnipeg.

With the other developing programs, Russia will be augmented with players from Ontario, France will benefit from additions from Quebec and The U.S. will feature players from Canada West, including Manitobans Janelle Huberdeau of Lorette, Kinley Graves of Stonewall and Jessica Friesen of Steinbach.

Glendale's Steep honoured

GLENDALE'S Andrew Steep has been named winner of the Moe Norman Apprentice of the Year Award in a list of 2012 national honours announced this week by the PGA of Canada.

In addition to recognizing Steep, the PGA of Canada also said that Eric Laporte is the Mike Weir player of the year, Shaun Piercey is the Pat Fletcher retailer of the year, Cam Martens is the George Knudson teacher of the year, Doug Lawrie is the Jack McLaughlin junior leader of the year, Jon Roy is the Bern Kern coach of the year, Trevor Goplin is the Murray Tucker golf professional of the year, Mike Kelly is the Tex Noble Award winner for professional development, Lorne Rubenstein is the recipient of the George Cumming Distinguished Service Award.

In an unusual move, the national winners will be recognized on foreign soil.

The PGA of Canada has decided to hand out the awards at the (U.S.) PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 25.
