Normandeau up and quits WHSFL post
THE Winnipeg High School Football League needs a new commissioner after Paul Normandeau's abrupt resignation at a league meeting last week.
A motion to review the position of WHSFL commissioner was expected at the meeting, held last Friday at Oak Park High School. There were 31 varsity teams and 12 junior varsity teams in the 2012 WHSFL.
Normandeau, who served as commissioner the past two seasons, resigned during the meeting before any motion was made.
"He spoke about his contributions to the league and to football in Manitoba. He wished good luck to whoever would take over, and he departed," said a coach, who did not want to be identified.
After that, Dave Bard, the physical education co-ordinator of Winnipeg School Division, led the meeting.
Normandeau could not be reached for comment.
The coach said most coaches were surprised by Normandeau's resignation and there was confusion about what would be in the motion.
"That was a concern for many of the coaches, who unfortunately didn't understand that the motion was to be for a vote to review (the commissioner position) or not," he said. "Some coaches thought the motion was (that) we were going to have the review at that meeting. But it still had to go to a vote."
He said the idea to review the position of commissioner stemmed from concern that there are too many responsibilities on one individual more than dissatisfaction with Normandeau's performance.
The position pays an honorarium of $2,500, which is "nothing compared to the amount of time that is put in," the coach said. The position includes scheduling, disciplinary matters, league rulings and managing website content, among other duties.
A subcommittee of coaches is expected to meet this week to review how the responsibilities of the commissioner could be eased and to find a replacement.
