Goldeyes foundation seeks

charities' funding requests

The Winnipeg Goldeyes Field of Dreams Foundation is accepting funding requests between now until Dec. 14 from registered children's charities within Manitoba for funds raised during the 2012 season.

All requests must be submitted through the team's website, Goldeyes.com, and include the nature of the organization, the amount requested and what the funds will be used for. Since its inception in 1995, the foundation has distributed more than $1.6 million to children's charities in Manitoba.

Grassie's book on bonspiel ready

Sean Grassie is now both a curler and an author, as he will officially launch his book, Kings of the Rings: 125 Years of the World's Biggest Bonspiel, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the McNally Robinson bookstore in the Grant Park Shopping Centre atrium.

The book chronicles the history of the Manitoba Curling Association's annual bonspiel, which will celebrate its 125th anniversary in January.

At the 2011 MCA bonspiel, Grassie and his Deer Lodge team won the major Free Press Trophy. Team Grassie reached the MCA bonspiel championship final in 2012.

Winterhawks' Leipsic wins award

A nine-point outburst in three games last week has earned Portland Winterhawks forward Brendan Leipsic of Winnipeg the Denny's Western Hockey League player of the week award.

Leipsic, 18, scored three goals and had six assists along with a plus-5 rating to help Portland win all three games.

Leipsic, a 2012 NHL draft pick of the Nashville Predators, is fifth in WHL scoring with 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points in 22 games so far this season.

Wayway's Turner player of week

Russell Turner of the Waywayseecappo Wolverines has been named the inaugural winner of the Recycle Everywhere-MJHL Player of the Week.

Turner, 20, recorded eight points (5-3) in three games last week for the Wolverines. The Waywayseecappo team has won its last two games and is fifth in the Sher-Wood Division with 11 wins and 24 points.

-- Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg won the women's division at Racquetball Canada's National Team Selection Event last Sunday, beating Christine Richardson of Regina, 16-14, 15-12 at the Globe Fitness and Racquet Centre in Kelowna, B.C.

Saunders, the 2012 Canadian racquetball champion, is unbeaten in Canada this year. Her results from last weekend will be combined with results from the National Team Selection Event in February 2013 in Brossard, Que., and the 2012 Canadian National Championships last May to select the players who will represent Canada at the 2013 Pan American Championships next spring.

-- William Lyburn and his Deer Lodge men's curling team jumped into fourth in the Manitoba Curling Tour men's rankings by winning the DEKALB SuperSpiel in Morris last Monday and the $10,000 prize.

Team Lyburn, which also includes James Kirkness, Alex Forrest and Tyler Forrest, defeated Switzerland's Alexander Attinger 8-1 in the final of the DEKALB event.

Sean Grassie and his Deer Lodge team reached the semifinals and remain No. 1 in the rankings, followed by Gimli's Daley Peters, also a semifinalist.

-- Nicole Laramee of the Portage Saints and Nicole Levasseur of the Lorette Scorpions have been selected as the players of the week in the Winnipeg Women's High School Hockey League.

Laramee scored two goals in her Saints team's 3-2 victory over the Vincent Massey Trojans last week and was selected the CTV Division A player of the week. In the Winnipeg Free Press Division B, Levasseur scored two unassisted goals in a 4-2 victory over the College Jeanne Sauvé Olympiens

-- Sydney Alexander earned a silver and Emily Blackner placed fourth in their events earlier this month at the Combs International gymnastics competition in France. Both athletes are members of the Panthers Gymnastics Club of Winnipeg.

Alexander won silver all-around in the espoir competition for 10-to-12-year-olds and Blackner was fourth in the junior beam final.

At the Massilia Cup in Marseilles, France, also earlier this month, Natalie Gervais from Springers placed ninth on beam and Sydney McEachern placed 11th on floor exercise.
