DEFENCEMAN Halli Krzyzaniak of Neepawa has been named an alternate captain of Canada's women's under-18 team in the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women's World Championship in Finland.

Krzyzaniak, a member of B.C.'s Pursuit of Excellence female AAA midget hockey team, is joined on Team Canada by forwards Ashleigh Byrkaliuk of Brandon and Cassidy Carels of Bruxelles.

Canada was to play its opening game this morning against Hungary. The tournament's gold-medal game will be played on Jan. 5.

THE Winnipeg Wild of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League are out to a 2-1 start at the prestigious Mac's Midget AAA World Invitational Tournament in Calgary.

The Wild have wins over Saskatchewan's Prince Albert Mintos and the Edmonton SSAC, with a loss to B.C.'s Cariboo Cougars.

The Wild will meet the Calgary North Stars tonight in their final round-robin game. The playoff round is set for Monday with the championship final on Tuesday.

Leading the Wild so far are Ryan Pruden, Mack Hardy and Jackson Keane with a pair of goals each.

THE Brandon Wheat Kings found out on Thursday they will be re-joined by left-wing Michael Ferland, a 20-year-old player who has been reassigned to the Western Hockey League team by the Calgary Flames.

Ferland, a 2010 draft pick of the Flames, has spent most of the 2012-13 season so far with the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League. He has dressed for just seven games with the Heat and made three appearances for the ECHL's Utah Grizzlies, finishing with a single assist.

In 68 games with the Wheat Kings last season, Ferland scored 96 points, including a team high 47 goals.

THE Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League will hold its annual all-star game on Jan. 12, 2013 at the Credit Union Place in Dauphin at 3:30 p.m.

The East Division team will be coached by Dan Eliasson of the Winnipeg Thrashers and the West Division team will be coached by Ken Schneider of the Brandon Wheat Kings.
