U of M rookie wins bronze
UNIVERSITY of Manitoba track rookie Alhaji Mansaray claimed a bronze medal in the high jump over the weekend at the CIS Track and Field Championships in Edmonton. Mansaray earned the bronze with a 2.06 leap on the second day of competition, which was held at the University of Alberta.
The Bisons sent 15 athletes to the championship meet this year. In the final team standings, the Bison men finished 12th, up from their 2012 14th-place finish. The women's team landed in 22nd place.
Tigers maul Cougars
THE Neepawa Tigers triumphed with a 4-1 win over the Carman Cougars on Saturday to claim the AA High School Hockey provincial gold medal.
Four Tigers were named to the tournament all-star list, including forwards Kyle McDonald and Garrett Rempel, blue-liner Cody James and goalie Grant Graham. Rempel, who scored eight goals and added three assists in four tournament games, was also honoured as tournament MVP and given the player's choice award for his dominant performance.
Cougars forward Mason Metcalf and Deloraine-Hartney Colts defenceman Ty Moffat were also named to the tourney's all-star team.
Calvert, Brown win gold
TWO up'n'coming rinks claimed gold at the Ste. Anne Curling Club on Sunday in the provincial under-18 curling championships.
In the men's under-18 tournament, Carberry skip Braden Calvert led his team, including third Shayne MacGranachan, second Cody Cherepuschak, lead Max Van Kommer and coach Grant Calvert to a 9-8 win over West Kildonan skip Matt Dunstone's team.
In the women's tournament, Team Brown from Pembina defeated Team Syrnyk in a strong 12-6 match. The winning team, led by skip Hannah Brown, also includes third Jenny Greig, second Paige Watkins, lead Samantha Lyle, fifth Hannah Suss and is coached by Russ Hinds.
